The standard we work to
100-year slate lifespan
Natural slate is known for its durability and can provide protection for decades when properly maintained.
Straight answers on roof condition
We check the roof properly before suggesting the next step. That means you get advice based on the actual fault, not guesswork.
Help when weather causes damage
Storm damage can leave a roof exposed fast. We respond quickly to make the area safe and stop the problem spreading further.
Slate roofing that stands up to Scottish weather
Slate roofs look smart, last for decades, and withstand the weather well, but they still need proper care when damage occurs. We handle slate roof services, from full installations to repairs that prevent small faults becoming bigger leaks. Cracked, slipped, or missing slates can allow water into loft spaces and roof timbers if left unattended.
Millar & Co Roofing Services sorts ridge and hip tile issues, flashing faults, and storm damage after periods of high winds and heavy rain. Where needed, repairs may include cement work to restore bedding and pointing, while wider property maintenance can help address related exterior issues. With 15 years of roofing experience, we match the work to the condition of your roof, helping protect your property while maintaining the character of the building.

Repairs that deal with the real cause
Nail fatigue, often called 'nail sickness', is a common problem on older slate roofs, and it can cause slates to slip even when the slate itself still looks sound. Our inspections focus on what is actually failing, so you're not left patching the same area again a few months later. We check vulnerable spots such as valleys, chimney edges, and rooflines where water can creep in quietly before staining ceilings indoors.
Leadwork and flashing repairs are a big part of keeping a slate roof watertight, especially after rough weather. When a roof has reached the point where repeated patch repairs no longer make sense, we can advise on a full replacement with clear, straightforward guidance.
Why slate remains a solid choice
Our slate roofing work gives you a material that lasts well over 100 years when fitted and maintained properly. You also get a natural finish that suits many property styles and can add value when the roof is in excellent condition. Slate stands up well to harsh weather and offers strong fire resistance, which makes it a dependable option for long-term protection. Low maintenance needs and its sustainable nature make it a sensible choice if you want durability without constant upkeep.
Contacted Millar & Co Roofing & Roughcasting about an issue with our chimney where water had been getting in around the lead work. David came out quickly, explained the problem clearly and recommended renewing the lead flashing and repointing the chimney with lime mortar. The work was carried out to a very high standard – the new lead work around the chimney looks extremely neat and solid, and the chimney has been properly repointed using lime mortar which suits the age of the property. The team were professional, tidy and clearly take pride in their work.
